Basics of a keto diet for beginners

Here are the different types:

Standard Keto Diet: This is extremely low carb, a moderate ratio of protein and high-fat diet. The standard proportion is 75-20-5. 

Cyclical Ketogenic Diet: This form of keto diet involves periodic consumption of high-carbs like 5 low-carb days followed by 2 high carb days. 

Targetted Ketogenic Diet: This diet form allows you to add a carb to your meal plate after certain targetted activities. 

High protein Keto Diet: This is very similar to a standard keto diet, except that it has more concentration of protein. The ideal ratio is 60 (fat)-35 (protein)-5 (carbs). 

So which diet should you follow? Well, all that depends on the kind of goal you want to achieve. More importantly, it is dependent on what your body can currently handle too. But first, what does the “keto” in the “keto diet” mean?

Your body uses glucose as a means of fuel to run your body on a day-to-day basis. The glucose is derived usually from the carbs that you consume. In keto, we’re cutting out the carbs since they take a while to break down and get stored as body fat. 

The carbs are now being replaced by a high amount of fat intake, which breakdown in the body to produce something called ketones in the blood- which is a fuel molecule that your body uses in place of glucose. The liver produces ketones from fat.
